under the red hood (and other geeky goodness)
I watched Under the Red Hood a couple weeks ago with my brother and loved it. I was actually surprised to find out how dark it was – I know, I’m watching Batman, right? I guess I’m used to cartoons being a bit more tame. The opening scene has the Joker beating Robin with a crowbar. Definitely a bit more intense than expected.

The plot is very emotional and mature as well. It’s based on the 2005 Batman series Under the Hood, which I didn’t read but want to now, and Death in the Family, which was made in like, the 80′s or something.
I don’t know too much about comics, really, I just buy a few here or there that look interesting. And I watch Justice League and Justice League Unlimited. Still. In fact, I just finished watching an episode where Wonder Woman dances with Batman and goes clubbing in Paris. No joke. But after that she saves the world from an immortal Nazi who set up a huge asteroid shooting gun in space.
I bought Jodi Picoult’s Wonder Woman comic, Love & Murder, last summer. It was alright. I was expecting a real emotional expose but it didn’t happen. Instead the Amazons attacked Washington D.C. Okay.
And as you may have noticed, I’m a fan of the Green Arrow. Quiver, Archer’s Quest, Sounds of Violence and City Walls are pretty amazing. I like Green Arrow because he’s human, funny and a bit of a jerk. Actually, a lot of a jerk. What kind of man cheats on Black Canary? Seriously not cool. But then you have inner turmoil. And that’s interesting. Ah, inner turmoil.
So, ah, know what else is interesting? My birthday is coming up! Pretty exciting, huh?

coordination
I am not known for my organizational skills, yet somehow I have been put in charge of booking interviews with all aldermanic and mayoral candidates. It’s really exciting, actually. I’m kind of behind the scenes making things happen and it’s really rewarding. I’m also doing a lot of the aldermanic interviews myself, but the mayoral ones will be on the Thursday morning shows with Ola and Greg.
The interviews themselves are going okay. Each aldermanic candidate is asked basically the same questions, so it’s not too complicated. I just need to work more on sounding like I’m not reading a script. I’ll have a lot of opportunities to practice, I guess. Three interviews tomorrow and at least 8 next week. So by next Friday I’ll have done about 20 interviews.
The crazy thing is, that’s nowhere close to the amount of aldermanic interviews we need to get them all. After next week we’ll be approaching half.
Next week is my last week at CJSW! Ahhhh!
Anyways, listen to CJSW 90.9FM at 8:30 am tomorrow morning for our first mayoral interview with Paul Hughes! Here’s the schedule (so far) for our Thursday morning interviews.
July 19 – Paul Hughes
July 26 – Naheed Nenshi
Sep 2 – Alnoor Kassam
Sep 9 – Craig Burrows
Sep 16 – Bob Hawkesworth
Sep 23 – unconfirmed
Sep 30 – Ric McIver
We’re going to have to put more candidates on some different shows because we’ve run out of Thursdays before October 18th, as you can see.
Anyways, that’s what I’ve been doing. And reading Green Arrow comics. I bought Sounds of Violence the other day and read my brother’s copy of Archer’s Quest. So good! So amazingly good. Just adapt these into movies, please.
wonder woman gets a makeover…again
Is it just me or does nobody really like Wonder Woman the way she is? I mean, they’re always trying to change her. I remember reading an article back in the early 2000′s that said DC was contemplating making her black with an afro. Nobody seems to dig her story either, they’re always trying to mess with her origins.
That said, while I don’t think this new Wonder Woman looks so bad, I don’t think this should be her official costume.
“What woman only wears only one outfit for 60-plus years?” Michael Straczynski, who is writing the new Wonder Woman series, told the New York Times.
Well, female superheroes do, for one. It’s just how it is. It provides continuity and identity.
I do think Wonder Woman should have more than one outfit though. This could be one of them. Nite Owl from Watchmen had a lot of variations of the same costume. I think he had a winter one, an underwater one and a few others. They all looked similar but were modified for different conditions.
So that’s what I think Wonder Woman should have – an extensive wardrobe of similar looking but different outfits. This could be her outfit for cold nights or something. Anyways, that’s my two cents.
I love Wonder Woman.

finals suck
…and so I will direct you to some other cool posts you should probably check out:
blogiraptor has a great post on the worst (and most hilarious) superheroes, like animal-vegetable-mineral-man. Good material for putting off studying =)
Remi Watts has a post about the various responses my book review has garnered on Facebook. Go here to contribute to the discussion about sex, lol.
Nick Walks the Dinosaur is a cute webcomic and also a nice distraction from studying.
You know, how about you just check out my blogroll. You’re bound to find something you like there.
Also, I just finished reading the Bacchae studying for my Mythology final. Dionysus is bat-shit crazy.

The Watchmen by Alan More and Dave Gibbons
SO AWESOME. Read it.
That’s all I really can say.
I mean, if you’ve been following this blog at all, you know I don’t just plow through books, I take my time.
Well I finished this in like, A DAY, so I think that’s saying something.
But seriously, this opens up a whole new world of reading that I am excited to explore: graphic novels.

So, I started reading Ben Hur by Lew Wallace because I love the movie, however, the book is incredibly dry. It reads like a textbook, and the first 70 pages are about the nativity story which, really, is quite boring. I finally figured this out around 30 pages in and skipped ahead to where Ben Hur’s story starts.
