{April 19, 2008}   Jack Ryan + Poetry = ?

The Hunt for Red October

So, I haven’t started reading The Hunt for Red October yet, -I’ve started Paradise Lost (post to come…whenever) and have been busy with school – but I watched the movie tonight because I needed to chill and it’s one I simply cannot get bored of.

Also (and this does tie into the first paragraph…oh yes) I’ve really been getting into poetry. John Donne and Robert Burns are of note. John Donne seems really bold and sincere (“Death, thou shalt die”) and I just love the Scottish words from Burns. And Auld Lang Syne… is seriously such a great poem! I love it!

So, if you read enough poetry (or are an angsty teen, of course), you feel compelled to try writing some of your own. And so I have. As I said, I was watching The Hunt for Red October…

Epic maneuvers, is there anything truer
In a John McTiernan flick?
A Lithuanian with a Scottish accent;
A sub undertaking a perilous descent
Threw Jack Ryan in the thick.

In a crunch and based on a hunch,
The Americans made a move.
The Russians had a wish to defect
And their hope was, to some effect,
In the hands of a ‘buckaroo.’

The sub was silent, everything quiet,
The Russians discussed the Dream.
Jack would not stop trying,
Despite his fear of flying,
To aid the Russians’ scheme.

Ramius wasn’t lyin,’ but neither was Jack Ryan;
Not much was bulletproof.
Turns out the kitchen guy
Really was the commie spy!
Hide and seek ensued.

Epic maneuvers, is there anything truer
When it’s written by Tom Clancy?
Details of a sub, roof to floor;
I love the action, intelligence and more!
What’s to dislike, I can’t see!

Mwhahahaha! If you haven’t seen the movie or read the book that might not make the most sense, but I was thoroughly amused - although I don’t know how grammatically correct the word “truer” is. Microsoft Word didn’t have any qualms with it…but whatevs, if Lewis Carrol can make up retarded new words (like frabjous), grammar rules can bend for me. =P

Your poem is brillig with just a touch of slithy. :o )

Just as long as you keep the momeraths away… =P

I’ll hide them in the borogroves and threaten them with my vorpal blade if they don’t behave. :o D
